In conversation with Antica Farmacista Perfumer Shelley Callaghan, learn more about the the inspiration behind Magnolia Bloom—a fragrance born from springtime walks beneath fleeting magnolia blossoms, this scent interprets the flower as an atmosphere rather than a single note, preserving its beauty long after the season has passed. Velvety petals are brightened by dewy freshness, echoing the cool air and rain-washed light of early spring. Airy yet enveloping, it captures the hush beneath towering blooms and the quiet sense of renewal that lingers after the flowers fall.
What inspired this scent?
Every spring in my Seattle Capitol Hill neighborhood, there is a brief and breathtaking transformation. Quiet residential streets suddenly feel ceremonial, lined with towering magnolia trees in full bloom. The scale of the trees is impressive and branches crowned with oversized, creamy white flowers that seem almost sculptural in scale. For a few short weeks, everything feels softer, brighter, and more alive.
These trees have become part of my personal rhythm of the season. Whether I’m out for a run, or walking Georgie (my Frenchie) beneath the arching branches, I find myself slowing down, looking up, and taking in a scent that is impossible to ignore. It floats through the Seattle cool, misty air... lush and luminous, with a softness that feels comforting and an elegance that feels quietly powerful. It’s one of those moments that stops you in your tracks, not because it demands attention, but because it offers a rare kind of beauty that feels both grand and intimate.
When you smell Magnolia Bloom, does it take you to a specific place or memory? Where do you want people to be transported when they smell this?
For me, it’s that moment standing high above the coastline, the breeze alive with salt air and the heady perfume of orange blossoms. I hope this scent transports people to a sun-drenched coastal escape—where land meets sea, and nature’s contrasts come alive in every breath.
How does this scent fit into the overall Antica collection, in your opinion?
Magnolia is also one of the most challenging flowers (in my opinion) to capture authentically in fragrance. Its character is not simply floral. It’s layered and nuanced, with a creamy, almost milky richness in the petals, balanced by a fresh, dewy brightness that gives the bloom its lift. I wanted this fragrance to reflect that duality: the feeling of water-dappled petals after a spring rain, the velvety texture of the bloom itself, and the subtle sparkle of citrus that quietly runs beneath it all, keeping the scent radiant and fresh.
What gets you excited about this specific fragrance?
Rather than creating a magnolia that feels overly sweet or purely green, my goal was to translate the full sensory experience of standing beneath the trees themselves...the scale, the air, the softness, and the gentle energy of renewal that comes with late spring in the Pacific Northwest. It’s not just the smell of a flower, but the atmosphere that surrounds it.
This fragrance is, for me, a love letter to those fleeting moments. To seasons that pass too quickly, to everyday walks that become rituals, and to the way scent can preserve a feeling long after the blossoms have fallen. My dad always said….you need to “stop and smell the roses”….and not only do I have a pact with myself about ALWAYS stopping to smell the roses, the magnolia bloom is even more majestic to me!
